It’s incredible to think that we have reached the beginning of term three, and for that matter, semester two. Semester one was a hugely busy and fun semester of learning and exploring in the Performing Arts space, and I am excited by the ways that we have set ourselves up for a thrilling second semester.
As the Performing Arts specialist I am responsible for teaching am engaging and relevant Performing Arts program to students across the whole school, from Prep to grade six. In semester one I worked with the junior years (prep and 1/2) in the Performing Arts space and this semester I will be working with the upper years (grades 3/4 and 5/6). At the beginning of the year I must admit I was somewhat nervous by the prospect of two terms of teaching only Preps, ones and twos. I had had some experience in teaching these age groups, but never for a concentrated period of time. I was excited but somewhat unsure as to how I would engage students so young with authentic and valuable Performing Arts learning?
As it turns out I should not have been worried, semester one was a joy to teach, and I was blown away by the skill, enthusiasm and hard work our youngest students bought with them last semester. My hope is that through this introductory semester I have given the preps, ones and twos a great introduction to Performing Arts skills, concepts and practices that they will continue to develop as they progress through their time at St Albans East.
This semester the upper levels will have their Performing Arts learning blocked out clearly across terms three and four. In term three we will be exploring Drama and in term four we will be exploring Music. Our approach to drama will be to introduce and explore the fundamental elements of Drama; plot, setting, character and tension. These elements will be explored individually and used to create and develop an end of term performance to share with student’s peers. As with last semester this learning will have a strong cross-curricular element, mist explicitly with Literacy, as the discussions on the dramatic element of plot will tie in richly with Literacy learning about narrative. All of this learning will be complimented by developing skills in communication, teamwork and creative thinking.
I am eager to get stuck in to this semester’s learning, and from the energy in the Performing Arts room I believe the students are too. Watch this space for updates!
Hard to believe that we’re already two weeks in to term 2!
We have hit the ground running in the Performing Arts room here at St Albans East, with our space filling up with busy students in Performing Arts classes and extra-curricular activities.
Our preps are continuing their combined exploration of dance, drama and music with focuses on teamwork and communication skill. We are starting the term with a focus on making and moving to music, which is a great way to practice our listening skill. Our term 2 learning intention is ‘In Performing Arts we Look, Listen and Share’.
Our grade 1/2 students are focusing on drama this term, after an enjoyable exploration of dance in term 1. Our term 2 learning intention is ‘Drama is Telling Stories on Stage using Acting’. We are using this learning intention as our definition of what drama is to help us in our term goal of creating and performing our own plays. We will be looking at drama elements such as plot, character, setting, stage craft, improvisation and teamwork over the course of this fun fulled term.
Our extra-curricular groups are picking up steam as well. Our 3/4 band meets every Thursday and is practicing improvising and jamming together with a focus on beat and rhythm. We have been having a lot of fun making grooves on the bass guitar and percussion instruments!
Our 5/6 band has been enjoying trying out our new electric guitars, recently using them to play the national anthem at the school assembly. Next week a third group will be starting, a 5/6 drumming circle. Very exciting stuff!

What an amazing few weeks it has been!
The last seven weeks of term 1 have flown by in a blur of activity and creativity. As the brand new performing arts teacher at St Albans East Primary I have loved jumping right in, learning lots, meeting many wonderful students and staff and beginning my journey as a primary school performing arts educator.
I have come to this role with extensive experience in teaching and performing arts. I’m super excited to have the opportunity to plan and deliver an engaging, high quality dance, drama and music program across the whole school.

Performing arts is a great addition to the curriculum. This year we will be exploring dance, movement, acting and drama, as well as developing our skills in creative thinking, teamwork, confidence building, problem solving, public speaking and being a good audience member. These skills are all transferable into student’s learning in literacy, maths, and across the curriculum.
This year I will be teaching Performing Arts to preps & grade 1/2’s in terms 1&2 and grade 3/4 and 5/6 in term 3&4.
I’m really looking forward to a fun year in our great Performing Arts space!
